Out How Pastor Steve Hannett Overcame Cancer!
“Yet in all these things we are more than
conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am
persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels
nor principalities nor powers, nor things present
nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any
other created thing, shall be able to separate us
from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our
Lord. ” (Romans 8:37-39)
God
Made A Promise & Kept His Word:
An Account Of How God’s Promise,
Through Jesus Christ, Overcame Cancer
The following is a brief account of a miraculous
event that can change your life:
What is the most important thing in your life? What
do you dream about and pursue with a passion?
Consider the question carefully, for after long
thought you may come to the realization that the
most important thing in your life is… your life!
Despite this simple truth, we can all admit that we
have at one time or another taken our focus off of
what strengthens our lives, and wrongfully placed it
upon things such as the “pursuit of wealth”, the
“pursuit of power”, and the “pursuit of fame”.
Then it happens. Something so drastic, so big, so
incredibly earth shattering, that in one second,
we’re forced to face the reality that our lives are
a lot frailer than we think, and time shorter than
we realized. It is this kind of life-threatening and
life-changing event that enables us to once again
see life with “child-like” eyes. It enables us to
realize that there is wisdom in following wisdom,
and that God is alive, and that we should seek Him,
the source of our life!
Following is an amazing opportunity to not only
realize the need to focus on the important issues of
“life”, but to also reach for the power that will
enable you to overcome every challenge you have ever
faced, are facing, and ever will face. If this seems
too incredible, you will soon understand.
THE NEWS:
It was the summer of 1993. I was 19
years old and while shaving one morning I felt a
lump in the right side of my neck. I wasn’t worried
at first because I frequently experienced swollen
glands when
I got sick. The two peculiar things were that the
lump was about the size of an egg, and I didn’t at
all feel sick. I went to my friends and family and
no one truly believed it was anything to be
concerned about. We waited one week to see if the
lump would diminish in size. One week passed, and
the lump never got smaller. We went to a doctor who
prescribed antibiotics and were told to see him in
two weeks. Two weeks passed, and the lump still
didn’t get smaller. We went for further testing and
the doctors thought it was either a cyst or some
kind of abscess (infection). I had more tests and
received no definitive answer as to what it was. The
doctors explained the only real way to diagnose the
lump was to operate and perform a biopsy. Though the
doctors assured me my problem wasn’t serious, I knew
something was seriously wrong.
Following three days of agonizing and
painful waiting, I received notice from my doctor
that the result of the biopsy was positive for
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma: cancer of the lymphatic
system- the very highway system of the immune
system! I was so devastated that I had difficulty
comprehending the meaning of the word “positive” in
the test results. It was as if my mind wanted to
hear the results were positive as in “good” even
though I knew it really meant that I had cancer. My
reaction after the news was less than anything to
brag about. In short, I went a little crazy. I
started screaming, kicking, and punching anything
and everything in my sight. Horrible thoughts and
pictures rushed through my mind with uncontrollable
speed. Thoughts of living in pain and thoughts of
dying young flooded my mind.
Shortly following the initial shock of
the diagnosis, I began receiving a battery of tests
to determine where the cancer had spread and what
damage may have already been done. It was during a
brief break between these tests that I was able to
spend a weekend in Long Beach Island, New Jersey.
One early evening, I went to the beach to think and
sort things out. I sat down, looked up at the sky,
and prayed two words that changed the rest of my
life. I prayed, “Teach me.” Before this
time, I prayed to a God “somewhere out there”, but
wasn’t really sure of who He was. I had previously
learned to recite prayers rather than to freely talk
with God, but the need to understand what was
happening to me, and how to overcome it, was so
strong that it caused me to plead with the God
“somewhere out there”, “Teach me”. I
didn’t understand what impact that prayer would have
on my life. Not only did God hear me, He answered
me!
The answer came about three months later
when I sought to learn about acupuncture and
acupressure from the martial arts expert, Dong Jin
Kim located in a nearby town. Upon meeting one
another, I explained that I had been diagnosed with
cancer and wanted to learn how to overcome the
disease. He boldly told me that he would not at all
teach me anything to do with acupressure or
acupuncture because he knew something much more
powerful than these natural methods. Still wanting
to learn more about these methods of treatment, I
asked him if he could at least recommend a few books
to help me. He responded by saying that I didn’t
need many books, I only needed one
book. He then slid an old, beaten up, black leather
book across the desk. I looked, and to my surprise,
it was the Holy Bible. Not understanding what he was
trying to tell me, I awkwardly asked, “What does
this have to do with me being sick?” His response
changed my life forever. He leaned across the desk,
looked deeply into my eyes, and softly said,
“Everything.” He said it with such certainty,
with such conviction, and such assurance that I knew
this man had something I desperately needed.
We met on the Friday afternoon of May 20th,
1994 and he shared what the Bible taught about
sickness and disease. One Bible verse after another,
he showed me who God was…the creator of the
universe, and the creator of my life! I then read
that I had something called sin, and that it caused
me to be separated from God. This I learned, was at
the heart of my real trouble.
Like most people, I thought that I was
“good”. I had never killed anyone and tried to live
a good life. The problem was that I had determined
my own level of “goodness” by my own standards
rather than God’s. God’s standard of “good” is His
law found in the Ten Commandments. The truth is
that because I had told lies, I was a “liar”,
because I had stolen, I was a “thief”, because I
hadn’t always loved God first in my life, I was an
“idolater”! By comparing myself to God’s level of
perfection, I no longer saw myself as “good”. By my
own confession, I was a lying, idolatrous, thief!
Does a righteous God simply overlook sin in a
sinner’s life! No. I learned that God can’t just
overlook sin. He doesn’t allow liars, adulterers,
and the unbelieving into heaven (see
Revelation 21:8).
What God’s love did was provide a way to
wash us and forgive us of our sins. This is why
God’s Son, Jesus Christ, was sent to suffer for our
crimes (sin) so we can go free. I read that if I
believed in Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of
God, and accepted His sacrificial death for the
forgiveness of my sins, that not only would I become
a heaven bound child of God, but that God’s promises
through Jesus Christ would heal me of cancer!
I had for many years learned that God was powerful,
that He was a God of love, but never realized that
He would cause His power to flow from His throne
directly into my heart, mind, and body! Bible verse
after Bible verse demonstrated that the Father in
heaven not only loved me, but wanted to bless me in
every way imaginable. Yes, God is able to do
exceedingly and abundantly more than we could think
or even ask! (Ephesians 3:20) I learned that through
Jesus Christ, God the Father made a promise that we
would be free from the curse of sin, and therefore
free from the resulting oppression of sickness,
disease, worry, stress, and any other type of
oppression. Here is what I read from the book of
Isaiah, Chapter 53, verses
4 through 5:
“Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our
sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of
God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our
transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities:
the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with
his stripes we are healed.
I learned the “key” necessary to receiving and
living in these amazing promises of blessing was
faith. The question that I was faced with that
day was, “Do I really trust God to perform what He
promised to do through Jesus Christ?” Knowing that
God cannot lie, I did believe, and knew that what I
was reading was cutting to the very core of who I
was, and what my future could hold. (Hebrews 4:12)
It was at this point in our meeting that I
recognized that Jesus was the Lord of all creation
and received Him as the Lord and Savior of my life.
I made a declaration that I would repent from sin,
and never turn back.
Immediately following my new-founded commitment to
Jesus, Dong Jin Kim laid his hands upon my hand and
commanded the sickness to leave my body in the
name of Jesus Christ. Power began to fill my
body, and I felt as if electricity was flowing
through my veins. When he finished praying, I knew
that God had healed me in the mighty name of
Jesus Christ. My entire body felt empty, light,
and I knew I was healthy again!
Following this amazing experience, the
doctors ran tests and found no sign of cancer! Even
damage that was done in my body from radiation was
reversed! I was 100% healed by prayer in the name
of Jesus Christ of Nazareth!
IMAGINE IF…
Please understand that this account is not to be
merely read and pondered. It should be applied to
your very life! Jesus Christ loves you
and wants to heal you just as He loves me and wanted
to heal me. How can we believe such a statement?
Simply because we know that “…
there is no partiality with God.” (Romans 2:11)
That means the sickness, trouble, or challenge
currently grieving you also grieves the heart of
Jesus. It is His power that will help you! Jesus
Christ died for all so that all could
be blessed. That includes you!
The first step is to realize that you too are a
sinner. Have you ever lied? Have you ever stolen?
Have you ever loved something more than God? Yes, we
have all fallen short of God’s perfection.
(Romans 3:23) The next step is to accept Jesus
Christ as the Lord of your life, and trust Him for
the forgiveness of your sins. Believe that He is the
only Son of God and that He died for your sins so
that you may have eternal life! Receive His mercy to
forgive you of your sins which have separated you
from His power and presence!
This life-changing step enables God to forgive you
of all of your sins and allows you to become
a child of God. Pray this prayer from the depth of
your heart and you will be forgiven for your sin and
become a child of God.
Father God, I realize I am a sinner and need to be
forgiven of my sins. I no longer want to live my
life separated from You. I believe that Your Son,
Jesus Chrsit, died for the forgiveness of my sins. I
accept You as my personal Savior and reject my sin.
I am willing to go forward trusting You as the Lord
of my life and will turn away from my sin. Please
save me and send Your Holy Spirit to fill me. I ask
this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Now that you have become a child of God, it is time
to seek God’s best for your life. Pray for God to
overcome your problem in the power and authority of
the mighty name of Jesus Christ! God will perform
His Word! Seek God’s direction and guidance in the
Bible, and diligently look for a church that teaches
the perfect, infallible, Word of the Bible. In this
way, you will be enabled to stand strong in the kind
of life that God has called you to live in Jesus
Christ. Be strong, be faithful, and pray always.
“And the peace of God, which
passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts
and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6)
If you do not have a home church, give us a call or

you!
